The amps and guitars and other instruments of yesteryear don’t command Fender or Gibson or Martin vintage prices, but who cares? Our beloved Silvertones are well-built machines, undeserving of what I’ve seen as a perceived reputation among guitar snobs as ‘not worthy of consideration. The items depicted on these pages are not for sale by Silvertone World. These are reviews of items from completed eBay and other sales on or around the date specified. One of my absolute favorite items from the past 10 years is this incredibly rare Murph-built electric string, built ‘on spec’ for Sears but never sold.
Although I concentrate on musical instruments on amps here, eBay has plenty of other terrific Silvertonium up for auction on a daily basis. Of course, I like to keep my eye out for non-Silvertone but kinda related products, too! January The second century of Silvertone begins! Thank you for making Silvertone World the most popular site of its kind on the web! We’ve got a great community here and at the Silvertone World Facebook page, and I plan to keep things rockin’ as long as I am here.

Our third house OK, it’s time to get this series polished off. I’m at peace with and actually a bit comforted by the idea that I could not possibly fit all of my memories and stories about our house on Montoursville’s Willow Street into one post. So I won’t even try. We lived at Willow Street from late until the summer of , so I was ages 10, 11 and 12 during that time — very robust years for childhood memories, much more so than when I was single digits in the hazy, trippy s.
Quick recap First family house in Montoursville was on Mulberry Street early s. Second family house in Montoursville was on Spruce Street mid s until summer of

Born in New Hampshire in , he spent much of his adult life as a farmer and blacksmith in nearby Vermont. After seeing a pair of terrestrial and celestial globes at Dartmouth College, he decided to make his own. He set about learning geography from an encyclopedia he purchased for the purpose and learned engraving from an experienced engraver of maps. Around he had produced his first globe, and by he and his sons had established an “artificial globe manufactory” in Albany, New York, where they produced globes of three-inch, nine-inch, and thirteen-inch diameters.
In he brought his globes down to Washington, D. On his business card he wrote that he was “now exhibiting for public inspection at the United States Library of Congress” a pair of thirteen-inch globes, and claimed he was “the original manufacturer of Globes in this country, and has brought the art to such a degree of perfection, as to supersede altogether the necessity of importation of that article from abroad.
They were purchased by the Library of Congress in from Harold F. Wilson, a descendant of the globe maker. The larger thirteen-inch globe is one of Wilson’s earliest dated globes , and was a gift to the Library of Congress in by the estate of the noted globe and map collector, Howard Welsh.

Subscribe to our mailing list The History of Maps Expanding Horizons European exploration in the 15th and 16th centuries drew on many sources. A growing desire for expansion and trade, along with advances in shipbuilding and commercial technique, fostered the search for new markets and for the legendary sources of precious metals and other commodities. Portuguese exploration and trade along the West African coast and to Atlantic islands, encouraged and directed by Prince Henry de Avis, the Navigator, continued throughout the 15th century.
He assembled an international team of experts which made revolutionary advances in geography, navigation, and cartography. Handbooks, guides, and charts, along with the invention of more sophisticated and practical nautical instruments, professional-ized what had been largely an intuitive craft. Crucial to these innovations were Muslim and Jewish contributions in mapmaking and navigational instruments. Christopher Columbus went to sea on the crest of these maritime advances.
